Medellin is becoming more modern every day. Construction of new skyscrapers is constantly underway, new apartment buildings are rapidly being built, and new parks are being developed right now. The city is growing at a very fast pace, and modernizing in an environmentally responsible, “green” way, too.
This progression is an amazing thing for the city, but some wonder if it will sweep away the paisa culture. It’s hard to imagine paisas (native Colombians from the Antioquia region) ever truly losing touch with their culture, though. Even with all the modern developments in Medellin, it’s still possible to travel back in time and visit a replica of an old-time Antioquian town.
Pueblito Paisa
Pueblito Paisa (Little Paisa Town) is a Medellin attraction that should be on every visitor’s to-do list. It is located at the top of Cerro Nutibara (Nutibara Hill), in the middle of the Medellin Valley. Any taxi driver will know how to get you there.
As you reach the top of the hill, you enter the scene of an old pueblo in Antioquia. There are restaurants and shops surrounding the main plaza, and in the center stands a beautiful fountain. The restaurants at Pueblito Paisa serve traditional Colombian food, like bandeja paisa(a large plate with steak, sausage, fried pork, red beans, rice, avocado, a fried egg, plantain, arepa and sometimes blood sausage). You can buy souvenirs and snacks at various shops, and in the courtyard, and there are small stands selling Colombian sweets.
The artifacts on display at Pueblito Paisa were recovered from a town that is now underwater in Guatape. You can tour a replica of a church, the mayor’s office, and a barber shop. The style of the buildings, and the bright colors, really show what life was like in Antioquia many years ago.
The View
Pueblito Paisa also offers a great view of the city. There are nearby stairs you can walk up and look out over Medellin. It makes for fantastic pictures, and is a perfect place to bring a date. During the month of December, the city lights up with Christmas decorations, and Pueblito Paisa is decorated just as much – it’s truly beautiful.
