Carnaval de Barranquilla (Carnival of Barranquilla) in Colombia is the second largest carnival in the world. Only the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is larger in terms of attendance and events.

This is a must see event and there is plenty going on in Barranquilla. Barranquilla is a city on the coast of Colombia and if you are in Colombia during this time, it is worth it to take a trip to Baranquilla for the four days of parades and other festivities.

This nod to Colombian culture, music, performers, songs, rhythms and people will make this years’ Carnival an event not to miss in 2019. The earliest event is a parade at night; La Guacherna that will take place on March 2, 2019. What a great time to be in Colombia when the weather in the U.S. is still cold and even snowing, depending where you live in the United States.
On March 1, 2019 there are two events; one is a Children’s Parade and the other is the Coronation of the Queen of the carnival. These are pre-events to the main Barranquilla Carnival.
On March 2, 2019, the Battle of the Flowers starts at 1PM on Via 40. This is a beautiful parade that features, well, lots of flowers. This is a six hour must see spectacle and well worth the trip to Barranquilla. There is more than just flowers, there is dancing, costumes, floats, horses and more flowers. Also injected into the parade are parody acts that include many famous celebrities and politicians. Expect to be delighted with sights and sounds during the Battle of the Flowers. The Grand Parade tours along the same Via. 40 at the same time the next day, March 3, 2019. This Grand Parade features over 300 participating groups. On March 4, 2019 along the same parade route, Via. 40, The Great Parade of Groups takes place.
Maybe the biggest spectacle takes place on March 5, 2019. This is known as “Joselito Leaves with Ashes”. The death of Joselito is a symbol for the end of the Carnival. Thousands parade down the street with coffins and stretchers to symbolize Joselito.
